Steven's first caught Pokemon, which he encountered after it snuck up on him and sprayed him in the face with water. One he'd caught the sphere whale, Steven tried to passive-aggressively turn it in for his Rocket Quota, but unfortunately it was too low-level for them to want it. (He then spent the next four hours looking for a high level and particularly stinky Trubbish to give them instead.) Although Steven contemplated releasing him back into the ocean, he ultimately decided to keep him in hopes of making him a useful and productive member of the team--although not before dubbing the pokemon 'Fail Whale' in frustration.
By the time Fail Whale evolved into a Wailord a month later, Steven had grown oddly fond of him. He was an asshole, yes, but he was Steven's asshole. And a real beast in battle too.
After beating Armin's Pelagic Gym, Steven granted him the Mystic Water he'd won.
His ability is Oblivious. In battle, he won't become infatuated or fall for taunts. His nature is Naughty; he's proud of his power. First met on a Goldenrod City beach as a Wailmer. Level 13 when first caught.
